Rabbi Gerald Sussman
As Temple Emanu-El’s spiritual leader since 1982,
Rabbi Gerald Sussman has seen a generation of temple members from bris or naming, to bar or bat mitzvah, to the chuppah.
Rabbi Sussman is a graduate of the Jewish Theological Seminary Class of 1979 and is a member of the Rabbinical Assembly (Conservative Judaism’s rabbinical organization). He is also a co-founder of the Union for Traditional Judaism. Rabbi Sussman officiates at services, is principal of our Hebrew school, conducts adult education and is available for counseling.
Rabbi Sussman is also active in the Staten Island community,serving on the boards of Project Hospitality and the Northfield Community Local Development Corporation.
The Rabbi’s special interests include the history of
Jews in Europe and the Americas, preserving Yiddish as a spoken language, Jewish mysticism, and activities promoting understanding between the different faith communities. He is also president and founder of the Staten Island Jewish Historical Society which is dedicated to preserving the unique history of the Staten Island Jewish community.
